BlackRock Tokenized Treasury Fund Surpasses $5 Billion in Assets

BlackRock's tokenized US Treasury fund, BUIDL (BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund), has surpassed $5 billion in assets under management, marking a watershed moment for the tokenization of real-world assets. The fund, which operates on the Ethereum blockchain, allows institutional investors to gain exposure to short-dated US Treasury securities through blockchain-based tokens.

The rapid growth of BUIDL reflects strong institutional demand for tokenized assets that combine the yield and safety of traditional government securities with the efficiency and programmability of blockchain technology. The fund has attracted investments from over 200 institutional clients including family offices, hedge funds, and corporate treasuries.

Broader Tokenization Trends

BlackRock's success has accelerated the broader trend of real-world asset tokenization. Competing products from Franklin Templeton, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs have also seen significant growth, bringing the total market for tokenized treasuries to over $12 billion. The market for all tokenized real-world assets, including real estate, private credit, and commodities, has exceeded $25 billion.

Larry Fink, BlackRock's CEO, has described tokenization as "the next generation of markets" and has committed to expanding BlackRock's digital asset capabilities. The company is reportedly developing tokenized versions of additional fixed income products and exploring tokenized equity offerings.

The growth of tokenized assets is also driving demand for blockchain infrastructure, benefiting networks like Ethereum, Polygon, and Avalanche that host these products.
