Global Crypto Users Surpass 800 Million According to New Industry Report

A comprehensive report published by Crypto.com Research estimates that the global number of cryptocurrency users has surpassed 800 million, representing approximately 10% of the world's population. The milestone was reached in March 2026, driven by growing adoption in developing nations, the expansion of crypto-linked financial products, and increasing integration of digital assets into mainstream financial services.

The report identifies key growth drivers including the proliferation of crypto-linked payment cards, the launch of spot ETFs in the US and Europe, simplified onboarding through mobile-first platforms, and growing use of stablecoins for remittances and cross-border payments in developing countries. India, Nigeria, Brazil, Indonesia, and Vietnam lead in user growth rates.

Regional Adoption Patterns

Asia-Pacific accounts for the largest share of crypto users at 38%, followed by Africa (20%), Europe (18%), North America (12%), and Latin America (12%). The strong growth in Africa is particularly notable, driven by mobile money integration, remittance use cases, and the young, tech-savvy demographics of the continent.

The report notes that the definition of "crypto user" has evolved significantly. While early adoption was driven by traders and speculators, the majority of new users are engaging with crypto through payment apps, savings products, and gaming platforms rather than traditional exchanges. This broadening of use cases suggests that crypto adoption is becoming more embedded in everyday financial activities.

Despite the growth, the report cautions that active monthly users represent only about 25% of total registered accounts, indicating that retention and ongoing engagement remain challenges for the industry.
